Guerrilla War: IDF Should Prepare For Hundreds of Heavily Armed Hezbollah Raiders Storming Israel (Massive Update)

Yaakov Katz at JPOST has an interesting piece about the 2006 Lebanon war up today. It’s a report on an IDF research article and it comes to some ugly conclusions..

  • Israel failed to execute the last war as well as Hezbollah
  • Israel needs to prepare for hundreds of 5 man Guerrilla teams infiltrating Israel in coming conflicts
  • Hezbollah is armed to the teeth with advanced weapons
  • Israel needs to prepare for a possible scenario where it has “No US Ally or Support”

We’ve already seen a waning of our US alliance under Obama, and a crimp on weapons from the US.

What is of particular interest is the guerrilla raiding teams aspect.

One notes that the catalyst for the last war itself was in fact two or three such teams carrying out a similar attack across the northern border against an IDF patrol, with the goal of killing & capturing IDF soldiers. Using the rocketing of Israeli civilians as a diversion, two such teams ambushed IDF humvees on patrol with RPGs and weapons fire, killing at least three soldiers & abducting Goldwasser & Regev – Who themselves were probably either dead or mortally wounded in the ambush.

Other raiding teams were lying in ambush within Lebanon itself, waiting for the IDF Tank response to cross the border in hot pursuit – Directly toward the intricate Hezbollah bunker & mine networks leading to further IDF losses. The result was the full outbreak of war, where Israel faced village after village stocked with these small teams armed up with advanced RPGs & anti-tank weaponry, complete with advanced armor piercing shaped warhead charges.

In 2000, another similar ambush occurred. That time however Hezbollah were wearing UNIFIL / UN uniforms and driving UN vehicles as their diversion & cover. They attacked a smaller IDF patrol destroying their vehicle, and hauled off three IDF soldiers who again were most likely either dead or mortally wounded.

Large scale raids

The prospect of Hezbollah scaling up this strategy is clearly a serious threat, dozens of such teams or even hundreds as mentioned in the article could create havoc in Northern Israel – Even a mini insurgency going on for some time, in a frightening hide & go seek manner relying on local ‘Arab Israeli infrastructure’ & villages for shelter or supplies, while seeking to kill untold numbers of Israeli civilians.

Unlike traditional threats, Israel could not rely on choppers, heavy weaponry or tanks to counter this terrorist rush. They’d have to be engaged by elite combat forces in close quarters. It should also be noted that these teams would not be Hezbollah regulars, but Iranian trained Revolutionary Guards serving Hezbollah as proxy fighters, these are the most heavily armed & best trained fighters terrorism can currently buy.

Hezbollah is in reality an army with the full Iranian weapons arsenal that employs terrorist tactics, this differentiates them somewhat from traditional guerrilla threats like those faced by the US in Iraq or Afghanistan, and represents a serious challenge. Hezbollah’s heavier weapons & longer range rockets require full logistics & abilities beyond any terror group to maintain & launch, light years beyond what any normal insurgency can muster. How do you engage with an army that does not follow any rules of war on any level? Worse, one who’s main goal is the killing of civilians and causing civilian damage / casualties as opposed to engaging in normal warfare.

The Syria Factor

Also of note, comments by Syrian President Bashar Assad to the effect that this is the manner Syria intends to fight Israel going forward. In 2006, Assad & Syrian Ministers hinted that Syria could resort to ‘Armed Resistance’ & Guerrilla Warfare to retrieve the Golan Heights.

Unable to defeat Israel with their conventional forces the Arabs & Iranians have now fully also invested themselves in terrorism & missiles that target civilians, instead of just tanks or planes to fight. It’s not very honorable, but it sure can kill a lot of innocent people.

Serious Challenges

Let’s hope IDF reforms past, present & future are gearing up to counter these realities. Its no small challenge as Israel needs to counter traditional warfare threats from tanks & planes. Missile & rocket threats from tens of thousands of short medium range weapons on multiple fronts. Missile threats from large long range ballistic weapons probably armed with WMD. A full terrorist threat comprising of gunmen & suicide bombers, and now a combination Guerrilla / Terrorist threat armed with conventional advanced army weapons.

SoccerDad provides a stunner of a Link update:

Using his rather impressive encyclopedic knowledge, SD points out to me that he has read something similar to the report being referenced here on Hezbollah previously! - In fact reading the link he sent my mouth kinda opened a bit. Written a decade ago, Israel’s current Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz warned of a nearly identical threat from Israel’s seam line with Judea & Samaria in reference to the Oslo accords, and the arming of PA security forces by Israel.

Reprinted from Commentary Magazine, December, 1999:
WHEN THE PALESTINIAN ARMY INVADES THE HEART OF ISRAEL

Yuval outlines in very specific terms the dangers to critical infrastructure, civilians, the military and the entire state that small groups of Palestinian guerrillas in a mass assault could  inflict. It’s a prophetic & sobering analysis, one which has left me with an entirely new facet of respect for Mr. Steinitz, while equally leaving me scratching my head somewhat as well.

Where were the IDF big thinkers?

Spanning all that time until now? How come these issues have not been addressed seemingly on multiple borders, and why have we seen in many ways now more than a decade of mediocre IDF strategic thinking, culminating in the painful 2006 Lebanon war? Is it merely complacency or something far more troubling.

Israel’s own Lebanon War Winograd Report blasted the IDF for their lack of out of the box strategic thought, compounded by having a Labor Union chief playing Defense Minister & a negligent Prime Minister. We’re going to need a better effort from our political echelon, regional commands & our upper mid level commanders. Hopefully, the mere fact that we are finally seeing the IDF internalizing, thinking & discussing, while simultaneously reporting & researching means the IDF has come to the same conclusion.

Ehud Barak’s sad Lebanese legacy

Equally, I would like very much to point out that the current Defense Minister Ehud Barak, while serving as the Prime Minister around the time Steinitz penned his own analysis above compounded this situation badly. Barak opened up this second northern front by precipitously & delusionally withdrawing from the Lebanon security corridor in the middle of the night. A move which was stunning in its lack of strategic planning or thought on so many levels it left me in tears when I watched it unfold on the news a decade ago.

He did so with no political deal whatsoever to fill the void left by the dismantling of the Phalange (Israel’s Christian Lebanese Militia allies) and withdrawal of IDF forces from Lebanon, let alone a secured peace deal. Without a doubt the single biggest strategic bungle of the last decade by far. We already know the results of that poor strategic thought on the part of Barak – It’s known as South Lebanon, now a mini self enclosed Iranian terror state which manifested itself in less than 5 years. One imagines he took something away from this & other stunning failures like Camp David II, which resulted in the most brutal terror assault Israel has ever seen.

I’m going to stop now, I’m feeling disillusioned & I have so much more to say I could go on forever. You could write a book about the issues in this post but I promised my readers I would hold post lengths and I’ve already doubled this post’s word count.

It’s not my fault, Gerstman found Pandora’s Box!

‘Invisible Shield’ Deployed: Trophy APS Declared Operational by IDF (Video)

Witness the power of this fully armed & operational er.. Active Protection System : )

Mark IV Merkavas have already had Trophies on-board in more limited deployment, but now the IDF after most recent testing has declared the life & tank saving missile protection operational. Great news indeed..

The IDF Ground Forces Command has declared the Trophy anti-tank missile defense system operational, following a series of tests last week that surpassed expectations for the system’s capabilities, it was revealed on Thursday.

The Trophy system, developed by Rafael, creates a hemispheric protected zone around armored vehicles such as the Merkava tank, which operated prominently in Lebanon. The system is designed to detect and track a threat and counter it with a launched projectile that intercepts the anti-tank missile.

The test was held last week in an IDF base in the South. The system was installed on old tanks and was tested in two positions – static and in motion. According to defense officials, it succeeded in intercepting all of the enemy anti-tank missiles.

Foreign military attachés from around the world were present at the test site and have expressed interest in possibly purchasing the system for their militaries [...]

Hard Kill: An Israeli Merkava Sporting Trophy in Testing

Here are details on the Iron Fist, the alternative Israeli APS system destined for Israeli Namer APCs. Yes, we made two of them & Iron Fist is mighty cool too..

US Falls Behind in Force Protection for Political Reasons

Meanwhile, the USA for what seemed like internal Army political reasons and an effort to flow funds to Raytheon opted not to test or employ Trophy despite the need for such a system to protect Strykers & US tanks, it was a pretty controversial move. 3 years later the much heralded Raytheon alternative (Quick Kill APS) which is very similar to the IDF Iron Fist I linked above, is still not ready and has met with design problems. Here’s 2007 NBC video on that controversy at the time..

I wrote a number of posts on Trophy and a few on the US aspect, you can view them with a search here.

The old adage Woulda, coulda, shoulda may be applicable. Back in Israel Trophy deployment is slated to expand soon to older Mark III & Mark II Merkavas as well in the future, that’s on top of the standard application for all new Merkavas off assembly lines. This should prove useful to help counter the thousands of anti-tank RPGs & weapons Hezbollah has in Lebanon.

David vs Goliath: The Hashmonean on BlogTalkRadio talking Bibi vs Obama (Audio)

Crossing Audio oceans Live from Tel Aviv

Kit Lange graciously invited me back to her show ‘The Front Line‘ to talk serious turkey regarding the new administrations in Washington & Jerusalem, and the much discussed ‘Clash of the Titans’ possibly developing between two key allies, the US & Israel under Obama / Netanyahu.

This was an awesome show (per the usual fare for Kit) and we hit on all the lightning rod topics: Iran, military confrontations, the Obama Quid Pro Quo regarding the Palestinians, the Peace Process, and more..

Be sure to tune into the archive from last week at the Front Line and get the audio skinny!

Already just yesterday, topics discussed have borne fruit and are being reported in the news (JPOST) involving IAF Arrow 2 Anti-Ballistic Missile batteries and reports on Juniper Cobra, joint US / IDF exercises Kit & I discussed on her show.. See what you might have missed, and catch Kit weekly on blogtalkradio!

Bush Bashing: President has whacked Hezbollah & Syria hard this week

Lame Duck?

The Bush Administration may be on its way out but there’s something to be said about the time period between administrations. We saw this week an intense American assault in what appears to be hot pursuit, land American forces into Syria, do some live firefighting and raze part of a village. It is still unclear what their targets were but this is the 1st time in 7 years of Bush’s presidency where we’ve seen this kind of bold moves on the Syrian involvement or lack thereof in stabilizing Iraq.

By the same token, America’s international anti-terrorism efforts scored huge this past week. It is little reported but a massive terror funding ring has been blown wide open in a long, complex US anti-terror and anti drug investigation which has revealed massive ties between Hezbollah & South American and Colombian Narco trafficking. An entire Hezbollah criminal drug funding ring has been busted while at the same time revealing the deep tentacles that organization has to brutal criminal elements and enemies of America. The Terrorists are dealing drugs for profit.

At the same time American intervention in financial markets have brought the dollar up, and oil way way down. The collapse of oil has put a sudden blast of hurt on Iran financially. All together not bad for a ‘lame duck’ President. I pray Obama could accomplish as much in a week.

Head Fake: Assad states his zero intentions of abandoning Hezbollah support (Updated)

Olmert & Sarkozy have really made a mess of things

The pressure is off Syria, Sarkozy is meeting with Assad, the Hariri tribunal is now a non issue, Syria has opened new ties to Lebanon while firmly establishing its tentacles in the country, Hezbollah has seized veto power over the Lebanese parliament as well as crucial geographic terrain and armed itself with advanced weapons..

Assad is a big winner so far, what has all this whimpering by the west led by Olmert achieved? Nothing. Except the collapse of resolution 1701 calling for Hezbollah to disarm, the collapse of Resolution 1559 calling for Syria to get out of Lebanon, even Olmert himself did not save his job, in fact his top political handlers who represented & guided the non face to face talks to build up Olmert foolishly have also now resigned..

So far Sarkozy has disappointed as well, neither his Syrian or Georgian interventions have produced anything but sliding backward results.

Thanks for nothing Olmert.

If anything, now the Golan is further legitimized as a bargaining tool contrary to our annexation of it, and Assad is out of his little isolation box while the Iran issue flounders. Total incompetence, can’t wait for Livni & more of the same..

UPDATE:

Frustrated Israel watches Syria break out of isolation

Israeli diplomatic officials viewed the four-way summit in Damascus among the leaders of Syria, France, Turkey and Qatar on Thursday with some frustration, saying Syrian President Bashar Assad had effectively broken out of his international isolation without having given anything in return. [...]

“He no longer needs to negotiate with us,” one senior Israeli diplomatic official said Thursday, following a statement Assad made Thursday morning that indirect negotiations with Israel had been postponed because of the resignation of Yoram Turbowicz, the head of the Israeli negotiating team, as Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s chief of staff. [...]

“He got out of his isolation, and now can put us on hold,” the senior Israeli diplomatic official said. “He is now trying to blame us for the postponement.”

Wow, these clowns we call a government are something else, outplayed by Syria’s Bashar Assad.. and now they are whining about it, peace that never was and never was to be.. So close yet so far! We are such suckers. Assad has REFUSED TO EVEN MEET US FACE TO FACE, are these Israelis not ashamed of themselves and the stupidity they are subjecting us too?

Record of total failure, yet on we go..

Add this to the endless string of policy failures Kadima has wrought this country, in fact not a single move by this government has actually panned out, not in the West Bank, not in Gaza, not in Lebanon, not on the Iran front, not in domestic issues like education, not even in securing the US Israel relationship with the friendly President Bush! Unreal, and we are still stringing it out as the article goes on to point out..

Meanwhile Assad has done nothing, openly states he intends to do nothing.. What exactly are we gaining here? Nothing but the total collapse of Israeli / US foreign policy in the region. The Americans via Rice did the hard work clearing the jungle, and now we’ve come in to do the final paving. I say again, bring on Livni!! We need more pain.

Target Canada: Hezbollah Terror Cell Busted in Jet Related Terror Plot

Local Canadian Hezbollah Operatives Active As Usual; Canadian Jews & Israelis need to be watchful

JPOST ‘Terror cell did surveillance work on El Al crews in Toronto’

The alert level has been raised for Israelis in Canada after it was discovered that a terror cell was following and carrying out surveillance on El Al crews staying in a hotel in Toronto, Channel 2 reported Wednesday.

El Al was forced to change the guidelines it issues its employees following the terror cell’s discovery.
The security establishment said that the cell appeared to be planning an attack on the Israelis and said the terrorists apparently belonged to Hizbullah.

On Tuesday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that in recent weeks, several kidnapping plots against Israelis abroad had been thwarted. Two weeks ago, the Counter-Terrorism Bureau in the Prime Minister Office put out a rare “general” travel warning for Israelis traveling anywhere overseas following Hizbullah’s threat to expect retaliation for February’s assassination in Damascus of arch-terrorist Imad Mughniyeh, which the Islamist group blames on Israel. [...]

Kudos to the Canadian Government and small intelligence apparatus for working deftly one hopes in conjunction with the Israeli intel system to quickly uncover and quell possible terrorist plots. Canada has a very large Lebanese ex-patriot population centered mostly on the east coast cities of Montreal & Toronto and spanning Ontario. Mostly Christian Lebanese and quite well acclimatized there’s no getting around the fact that with hundreds of thousands of immigrants coming to Canada of Lebanese & Palestinian origin, there will be extremists and radical Muslim supporters amongst the crowd.

Hezbollah has a massive support network in Montreal. The group enjoys large open public support, marches and demonstrations pulling in thousands of locals. Canadian Press has often reported on how the network is used for intelligence gathering, fund raising and terrorist purposes.
