Washington or Bust: Bibi Was Playing Against a Stacked Deck (Update-II Video)

“No winning strategy begins with a punch in the nose”
Close Associate of George Mitchell, Peace Envoy Extraordinaire.

Those were the ‘comforting sounds’ emerging from Obama’s point team on the Middle East & Israel the night before our great meeting in Washington. In other words, we will wait to lasso Israel around the neck for concessions toward the peace that never came, until later. Or in doublespeak, today we smile for the cameras, moderate Democrats & American Jewry,  to reassure them that Obama is not only Pro-Israel, but even knows what’s best for Israel! Later on we can make the public statements that deal the pain.

Indeed, that was some show today in Washington! Apparently they stressed the ‘know what’s best for you part’, as opposed to the ‘Pro-Israel’ parts, despite all the whispered sweet nothings about avoiding ‘face punches’ above. If this is the start of ‘a beautiful relationship’, we’ll surely be drawn & quartered here in Israel in no time at all!

Quite a crew..

To date we have seen: Sec of State Hillary Clinton, Envoy George Mitchell, Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, NSA’s James Jones, CIA chief Leon Panetta, Vice President Biden, not too mention political allies like John Kerry, all speak on the record of the ‘glorious opportunity that cannot be allowed to slip by for Peace right now’. We’ve heard how the Moon & the Starz & Obama are all aligned for the latest, greatest spectacle of Israeli ‘peace’ concessions with nothing in return.

In fact, we hear it from every single arm of the Obama administration, it oozes, permeates & pours out of every crevice, save one. The President himself has yet to spell it out, but today he did.

Our Good Pal, President Obama

He expects a fictional ‘Two State Solution’ by the end of his term, with one imagines fictional peace partners to go along with it. Is not willing to set any deadlines on Iranian appeasement talks well up to the end of the year! (Another 7 months without stronger sanctions!?), he clearly has little to no credible plan for dealing with Iran at all..

Obama drew his lines in the sand. Nothing appears very friendly in these matters. Israel has been willing to accommodate Obama, but was looking for some realistic time-lines, like the fall for actually DOING something regarding Iran’s endless stalling and the lack of INTL veracity regarding sanctions to avoid a potential regional war. We got what appears to be nothing of the sort. So much for having ‘friends in high places’..

Then again, only 31% of Israelis polled consider him particularly ‘Friendly’ – I wonder why?

UPDATE – CSPAN VIDEO of the presser
I don’t want to take potshots at Obama beyond normal, but he was particularly ‘eloquent’ in the 1st minute, where he rummages around emphasizing the US / Israel special relationship. Nice One! Truthfully, it all looked a lot friendlier when Obama embraced President Chavez.

UPDATE II – Links

Allahpundit doing some additional heavy lifting while Ed is away, notes via politico that the timelines envisioned by President Obama are even weaker still upon some examination..

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Obama offered assurances that he did not intend for talks with Iran to become “an excuse for inaction,” a major concern of Israeli officials worried that Tehran will string out talks while making progress toward acquiring a nuclear weapon.

But he also made clear that he was prepared to wait months for Iran to respond to the U.S. offer of better ties in return for halting its nuclear activities. He emphasized that the year-end timetable would be for assessing whether the diplomatic effort was “moving in the right direction,” not a deadline for reaching a final agreement with Iran on halting its nuclear activities.

“By the end of the year I think we should have some sense as to whether or not the talks are having some benefit,” Obama said

Prof Barry Rubin says, perhaps we are on solid footing. I don’t know, I remain a huge skeptic.. Holding out for the agent of change, to change his whole worldview seems like a longshot for now, I can’t help but get the feeling we should  be taping up ankles for the footing ahead. Horovitz is calling it Obama laying down the law.

American Power: US ‘Appeaser in Chief’ Warns Israel Not to Strike Iran

President Obama doesn’t like ‘surprises’..

(Haaretz) U.S. President Barack Obama has sent a message to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanding that Israel not surprise the U.S. with an Israeli military operation against Iran. The message was conveyed by a senior American official who met in Israel with Netanyahu, ministers and other senior officials. [...]

The message from the American envoy to the prime minister reveals U.S. concern that Israel could lose patience and act against Iran. It is important to the Americans that they not be caught off guard and find themselves facing facts on the ground at the last minute. [...]

Obama, the New Abraham of our age!

So this is effectively the 1st message Obama has chosen to deliver to Israel thus far. Further, by sending it along with a lone senior American official like the lone ranger mere days ahead of Netanyahu traveling to meet the US President, Obama  effectively conveys a policy message as well – Don’t expect any coordination or backup from America.

If the opposite were the case, Admiral Mullen, Secretary Gates, senior American commanders, or senior US intelligence officers would be the ones conveying these messages. That omission of senior security officials & talks sends a clear message that coordination is not ongoing, nor is it welcome.  To date they have refused to meet with Israel’s new government, The IDF Chief of Staff was denied meetings on his most recent trip in late March.. He cut his trip short & came home early.

Quid Pro Quo..

The American President has made  a large request, his cold warning is a catch-22. No surprises, and no coordination to avert one, in effect he has tried to tie Israel’s hands from defending itself should that need arise, the new Abraham prepares Isaac up for sacrifice to the ‘Grand Bargain’ Gods.

This is what the President’s new advisers must mean by ’smart power’ – Warning the need to be intimately involved while simultaneously bolting closed the door marked ‘involve me’, more like smart-ass power really. Those seeking the types of pressures Obama might choose to employ against us as penalty for not playing along with Palestinian concession Quid Pro Quo? - Here they are, delivered by lackey yet! As befitting the royal house of Obama, which one gathers only bows to Arabian Kings.

Israel has already made clear it intends to give President Obama some time, 3 to 4 months in order to test his ‘smart power’ appeasement strategies. But, there are warnings of our own. The ‘smart appeasement’ window isn’t open ended, time is now more precious. Maybe Obama should stop warning & start preparing, as Israel evidently is..

IAF practicing MIG-29 / F-16 dogfights

(JPOST) Israel Air Force test pilots are flying MIG 29 jets and conducting dogfights against the IAF’s F-16 fighters, Channel 2 revealed Wednesday evening.

The MIG 29, developed by the soviets in the 1970s, is one of the best fighter jets used by eastern and Arab countries, as well as by Syria and Iran. It was developed to counter American-made jets such the F-16 or F/A-18.

The jets were loaned to Israel by an unnamed foreign country. The experiment is meant to prepare IAF pilots for missions where they might have to fight a foreign air-force. “We tested them – we trained the IAF pilots against them,” an unnamed IAF official said. [...]

The IAF has according to the report also been testing the mechanics & aerodynamics of maxed up fully loaded F-16s, training & testing their performance loaded for bear with full strike packages.

Operation ‘White Robe’: 80,000 Mobilized to Secure Pope in Israel

Pope Lands in Tel Aviv, Choppers out to Holy City

A warm welcome to the Pope here in Israel, on his journey to Jerusalem Israel’s capitol for ceremonies, prayers & hopefully closer relations with the Jewish State. He was greeted on the red carpet by PM Netanyahu, President Peres, and over 60 Ministers.

Jerusalem will be tight today, as Operation White Robe has gone into effect to protect the Pope from extremists (Jihadists) during his visit. 80,000 personnel & police deployed to secure the area.

JPOST, YNET, Haaretz on the pope’s arrival & visit.
So far his message in Israel, the Holy Land –  Is one of hope for peace, and the need to combat rising anti-semitism worldwide.

Small Comforts: Obama and Israel Not Headed for ‘Train Wreck’

Lovely Analogy..

Herb Keinon goes the distance with Democratic Congressman Rob Wexler at JPOST in a 2 page interview. Of course the topic of choice, the until now seemingly arctic winds blowing Israel’s way from the Obama administration. A lot of people whom I respect are cautious, or coming to the relationship’s defense so far which is certainly a positive read on the situation, but in most cases they are defending against what Wexler himself defines as a ‘Train Wreck’ in the American Israel relationship..

[...] “I can say unequivocally that the anxiety is not warranted,” said Wexler, who has spoken to the US president about Middle East issues, and speaks regularly with top White House staffers dealing with the matter, including National Security Adviser Gen. (ret.) James Jones.

He arrived in Israel on Friday for a series of meetings in Jerusalem and in the Palestinian Authority, and will return to Washington on Monday.

“I am in constant contact with those in the administration responsible for policy in this region, and nothing could be further from the truth,” he said, regarding reports that the US and Israel are on a collision course.

At least someone is in constant contact, too bad these are not bilateral contacts with Israel.. We have seen very few of those thus far from America here..

“As someone who was with Barack Obama from the very beginning of his campaign, I am not going to be surprised or fall prey to the too often false representation of now President Obama; and likewise I think the degree of angst also misrepresents Prime Minister Netanyahu’s policies as well,” said Wexler, who spoke of Obama’s pro-Israeli credentials as one of the featured speakers at the Democratic National Convention in Denver last summer.

“These two men are not headed for a train wreck,” he said. “They are not. Both men want the relationship to be as strong, if not stronger – if that is possible – than it has been in the past.” [...]

All or Nothing?

What I will again say is that I find it somewhat amusing this notion of a train wreck, as if highlighting what are clearly major shifts in the new administration in Washington toward Israel, puts forth the notion that the two countries will be mortal enemies in the near term. This is somewhat of an absurd position, the USA & Israel were not mortal enemies when Bush SR. severely threatened Israel with 10 billion dollars in loan guarantees, nor were they mortal enemies when Clinton initiated the Oslo Accord ceremony leading to heavy concessions by Israel - But nothing remotely resembling peace.

We were certainly not mortal enemies or experiencing any train wrecks when we dismantled settlements & gave back Gaza in return for Hamas terrorists & rocket attacks. Nonetheless, these efforts brought little in return for a heavy price in Israel, including thousands of dead Israelis. Despite it all, we still seem to be targeted by the newest collection agency, and severely at that.

Israel is in a precarious position

Threats abound, peace is seemingly looking far off when one measures the realities of the area here. Despite those realities, there is a non stop effort currently to portray the exact opposite from the US, the EU, Russia & the UN, as if peace is only a small jump away. Pressures on Israel, which is already under duress including two wars in two years and possibly a large conflict on the horizon, when no resolution resulting from those pressures seems in any way imminent – These pressures are as damaging a policy as can currently be envisioned, and they are the core thrust of the Obama administration to date from what I can see.

Does that mean a train wreck?

No, but it does mean that lording assistance vs Iran for concessions is far from friendly, it is dangerous. Wexler maintains that is not the case, there is no Quid Pro Quo he says. But every single statement by top level US officials points in the exact opposite direction. These trains may not wreck, but they sure seem to be speeding farther & farther apart at alarming velocity..

Major shift in policy

Appeasing the Muslim street using Israeli concessions does not mean a train wreck has occurred in relations, but it does mean that Israel’s special & deserved status as a crucial strategic ally of the United States has seemingly softened severely at the expense of Muslim outreach. Frankly, representative Wexler is Obama’s number one outlet to the US Jewish community, his purpose has been to mollify American Jewish concerns with kind words both during the campaign and now.

His endorsement by the anti-Israel J-Street PAC gives little comfort, on the contrary it raises alarms and for good reason. J-Street puts all the onus & blame for lack of peace in the region on Israel, employs moral equivalency of the worst sort equating Israel’s vibrant morality led Democracy to Terrorists. If this is the line of the new American administration and to date something similar has been bubbling up out of Washington, then no train wrecks are needed..

Large questions remain

It is enough to tie Israel’s hands and derail us, to cause irreparable damage here. We don’t require any head on collisions..

As an aside, to date Obama’s amateurish crew seems to have little to no understanding of Israeli political realities. They seemingly live in a progressive bubble, SD touched on that a bit in the link above commenting on the excellent Jennifer Rubin. What if they collapse our coalition based government with their fanciful concepts or ineptitude? It won’t take all that much to accomplish that, and at what point does that constitute a train wreck if our brand new government is forced to topple under American pressure?

‘Great Society’: Iran Confiscates 84,000 Satellite Dishes

American President via video message called on Iran to display..
Peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization“.

Problem is, Iran is not led by peaceful people – Nor does it display under Islamic Fundamentalist rule much in the way of true greatness. While the US President was busy pandering to the Iranian regime, they’ve been busy curtailing personal freedom, hanging juveniles, stoning people, and all sorts of family fun activities befitting the great societies of our time..

Iran Focus – London, May 8 – Iran’s State Security Forces (SSF) confiscated 84,000 satellite dishes during the Persian calendar year that ended March 20.

“In the past year, 84,000 satellite receivers and other satellite appliances have been discovered and seized by police”, said the head of the SSF anti-smuggling department. “Fighting against forbidden and anti-cultural goods is the priority in our department”, he said. His remarks were carried by the state-run news agency Fars on Wednesday.

SSF agents went up rooftops in Tehran and other major cities removing satellite dishes which are banned in Islamic Iran. The Islamic Republic banned satellite dishes in 1995. The crackdown on satellite dishes was prompted by broadcasts from Iranian opposition groups whose television programs reportedly have a large audience in Iran.

Other examples of Mullah greatness this week via the Focus:
Dela Darabi – Beautiful Iranian juvenile hung secretly this past week;
Bombarding Iraqi Kurds in violation of Iraqi sovereignty;
Steadily progressing toward a secret & illicit nuclear weapons program;
Reaffirming deadly support for terrorist organizations

We can go on & on..
Just a few examples of the ‘Great Regime’ the Obama Administration seeks to appease at the expense of America’s allies like Israel, and Iran’s yearning to be free of oppression peoples & reformers.

Via Daled Amos, the Arab world is also thrilled with the appeasement effort so far, rebuffing both envoys Denis Ross & SecDef. Gates – Who were on missions to smooth over ruffled feathers. Mission Status? Failed.

Always Fresh: Subway to Give it Another Go in Israel

Sandwich maker has new franchisee..

We used to have a bunch of SUBWAYS restaurants in Israel, but the franchise folded. Globes reports that a new investor has picked up the American chain’s rights in Israel with plans underway to open up in Herzliah, with dozens more on the way if it all works out.. Including a planned marquee store in the heart of Tel Aviv’s Rothschild district.

Globes – Subway Restaurants is returning to Israel after a hiatus of several years. The sandwich chain has rented a 130-square meter restaurant in Beit Corex on Maskit Street in Herzliya Pituah will pay NIS 130 per square meter per month in a five-year lease with a five-year option to extend [...]

Personally, in light of the lack of outlets I have mastered the ‘Art of Subway’ at home where I build monstrous baguette based turkey sandwiches to the great delight of my cat & the local supermarket owner. But I’m in the Rothschild area often so maybe they can tempt me in again.. The area now features another fresh addition, a Mickey Ds – M’caffe complete in the American style.

Can’t say I’ve had the coffee just yet as my visits to McDs usually involve the ritual sacrifice of cows and the gentle sizzling of fries. No word on whether you can get a kosher sub just yet, I’d say odds are high, as you can already wrangle a kosher Big Mac in Israel without too much trouble. Of course the best part about Mcdonalds in Israel usually involves watching all the cute Israeli female soldiers picking up ice cream..

Hmmm.. ‘would you care for some nuts with that?’
