Rice-Grip: Israel held off State Dept pressure; Struck alleged Nuke site
Rice & CO. sought to prevent Israeli strike on Nuke site according to ABC report
I’ve been posting this past week about the difficult pressure Israel has been facing recently, care of an eager beaver US State Dept. seemingly sold on dangerous levels of appeasement to salvage its non-producing ‘diplomatic’ initiatives.
According to ABC, the pressure runs even deeper.
Reportedly ‘shockingly’ credible Israeli intelligence on a North Korean supplied nuclear facility of some sort in Syria, and the American split initiative led by the State Dept & Condi to prevent Israel from carrying out a critical defensive strike for Israel, and a simultaneous substantive blow in the global war on terror and proliferation. Rice is on her way back to Israel next week, I’m feeling fairly confident she will provide plenty of steam for me to continue my rice-grip series, especially after this & other whoppers of late..
ABC’s ‘Exclusive’: High Level Debate Stalled Syria Air Strike
The September Israeli air-strike on a suspected nuclear site in Syria had been in the works for months, ABC News has learned, and was delayed only at the strong urging of the United States. In early July the Israelis presented the United States with satellite imagery that they said showed a nuclear facility in Syria. They had additional evidence that they said showed that some of the technology was supplied by North Korea.
One U.S. official told ABC’s Martha Raddatz the material was “jaw dropping” because it raised questions as to why U.S. intelligence had not previously picked up on the facility. Officials said that the facility had likely been there for months if not years. “Israel tends to be very thorough about its intelligence coverage, particularly when it takes a major military step, so they would not have acted without data from several sources,” said ABC military consultant Tony Cordesman.
This whole thing raises a lot of questions, for one seemingly lackluster gun-shy American intelligence abilities hampered, afraid, & tentative as a result of weakness of resolve & faith at the State Dept level and up.
U.S. Cautious After Flawed Iraq Intelligence
A senior U.S. official said the Israelis planned to strike during the week of July 14 and in secret high-level meetings American officials argued over how to respond to the intelligence. Some in the administration supported the Israeli action, but others, notably Sect. of State Condoleeza Rice did not. One senior official said the U.S. convinced the Israelis to “confront Syria before attacking.”
Is this a joke? I’m surprised Israel even delayed at all, shocked America would seek to delay, and amazed at the lack of imagination proposed by the appeasers to ‘confront Syria’, accomplishing absolutely nothing whatsoever more than the obvious ensuing denial & the total loss of surprise / effectiveness.
Officials said they were concerned about the impact an attack on Syria would have on the region. And given the profound consequences of the flawed intelligence in Iraq, the U.S. wanted to be absolutely certain the intelligence was accurate. Initially, administration officials convinced the Israelis to call off the July strike. But in September the Israelis feared that news of the site was about to leak and went ahead with the strike despite U.S. concerns. The air-strike was so highly classified, President Bush refused to acknowledge it publicly even after the bombs fell.
What is the ‘impact’ of a Syrian, North Korean supplied nuclear program.. As well as a possible nuclear back-channel for Iran’s own illicit programs?
Whatchu talking about Willis!?
If this appeasement strategy is the recipe for Iran, the Palestinians, Iraq and the region as whole according to the Bush administration’s last year or so in office, I’d just as soon hope Israel politely rebuffs the US State Department more often than not going forward. That ‘timid pseudo intelligentsia crap’ will get you killed around here.

Memeorandum has the story now, most of the links cited are above, there may be more later for discussion. (I used to be memeorandum worthy but now I must suck! I can’t be sucking much worse than American intel lately though so that’s positive lol)
Edit: I ‘sucked too soon’ because I’m on the big board at the memeo again, thanks!
