Giuliani exhibits Foreign Policy clarity

Republican hopeful Rudolph Giuliani has put forth a major campaign foreign policy address. (H/T LGF)

I just read it but this section highlighted at Charles’ aptly shows the type of clarity this man brings to the table on issues I have some glancing familiarity with.

On establishing Democracy & the not so trivial causal link to good governance..

The election of Hamas in the Palestinian-controlled territories is a case in point. The problem there is not the lack of statehood but corrupt and unaccountable governance. The Palestinian people need decent governance first, as a prerequisite for statehood. Too much emphasis has been placed on brokering negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians – negotiations that bring up the same issues again and again. It is not in the interest of the United States, at a time when it is being threatened by Islamist terrorists, to assist the creation of another state that will support terrorism. Palestinian statehood will have to be earned through sustained good governance, a clear commitment to fighting terrorism, and a willingness to live in peace with Israel. America’s commitment to Israel’s security is a permanent feature of our foreign policy.

When I think of what went on that September morning and the sheer weight this man took upon his shoulders I can’t help but be awed, you can’t buy that kind of leadership. Irrespective of where you might stand on this or that particular issue, the other candidates in my eyes are all missing that special something that can only truly emerge in a trial by fire. Like a finely worked metal, for me Giuliani’s impurities will forever have been burned away by the forge.

‘Take me to your Leaders..’

Call me old fashioned but like FDR & Churchill, both themselves far from perfect, I wonder where my generation’s great leaders are and if or when they emerge I would be remiss to not have given them the full benefit of any doubt. For now I will content myself to support the ones coming out of the generation before me. Giuliani’s foreign policy goals deliver in spades.

Noose finally tightening on Iran

USA set to designate Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a Terrorist organization

I don’t know about you, but this is EXACTLY what I want for Christmas.

Everywhere you look from where I am sitting, be it just south in Gaza with the Hamas & Islamic Jihad, looking North towards Lebanon and the Hezbollah, or East towards Tehran itself.. The filthy fingers of the Revolutionary Guards are more than evident, pulling radical Islamic strings & sowing bloodshed and terror.

If you happen to stop in between in Iraq or Afghanistan, you’ll quickly find them murdering American servicemen as well, that might include British & Canadian troops, with Canadian forces in the last few months suffering particularly difficult losses to the infamous shaped charges the Revolutionary Guards are spreading about like candy. These explosives are designed implicitly to rip through protective armor & shielding, maiming and killing their targeted occupants.

Of course, the Iranian missionaries of murder don’t fight soldiers head on, they are cowards who target civilians with rockets, or scurry around like rats & roaches leaving roadside bombs along the way in the hopes of thwarting their number one enemy – Liberty & Freedom.

They train, they arm and they recruit because Iran is the foremost World sponsor of Terrorism, home of the Islamic Revolution and the Guards are the foot-soldiers in their terrorist army. It was the Revolutionary Guards who abducted at gunpoint the UK’s sailors recently, and it is the Revolutionary Guards whom Iran has threatened to employ in the training & deployment of over 50,000 human suicide bombers to target America & its interests.

When one considers all this, in conjunction with the mad drive for nuclear weapons, the endless threats and sickening repression, the lack of human rights, the religious police strolling around beating people for not dressing according to Islamic code.. One can only stop, look at the American administration and ask – What the hell took you so long!?

The United States has decided to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, the country’s 125,000-strong elite military branch, as a “specially designated global terrorist,” according to U.S. officials, a move that allows Washington to target the group’s business operations and finances.

The Bush administration has chosen to move against the Revolutionary Guard Corps because of what U.S. officials have described as its growing involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as its support for extremists throughout the Middle East, the sources said. The decision follows congressional pressure on the administration to toughen its stance against Tehran, as well as U.S. frustration with the ineffectiveness of U.N. resolutions against Iran’s nuclear program, officials said.

The designation of the Revolutionary Guard will be made under Executive Order 13224, which President Bush signed two weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to obstruct terrorist funding. It authorizes the United States to identify individuals, businesses, charities and extremist groups engaged in terrorist activities. The Revolutionary Guard would be the first national military branch included on the list, U.S. officials said — a highly unusual move because it is part of a government, rather than a typical non-state terrorist organization.

The order allows the United States to block the assets of terrorists and to disrupt operations by foreign businesses that “provide support, services or assistance to, or otherwise associate with, terrorists.” [...]

It is nice to see that congressional pressure has played a role in moving the US admin forward on this, but let’s not forget one thing. It is & was US Congressional Democrats who have been ceaselessly hammering in conjunction with their appeasing European friends on the US administration to open up dialog, sit down for chit chats & for all intents & purposes WASTE TIME, while Iran’s nuclear & terrorism programs steamroll onwards. This 1st step at trying to isolate & strangle Iran’s terrorism unit financially can lay the ground work, but it is high time the US stop playing pokey with regards to Iran.

Convenient Scapegoat? We choose Israel as usual.

It is popular in the bourgeois EU & corrupt / inept United Nations to muse how ‘World Peace’ magically leads through Ramallah, as if the Palestinians hold the keys to some magical future nirvana. That simply giving them their currently ungovernable state will make everyone break out in song and make fresh daisies grow while doves drop honeydew on our heads.. But that’s nothing more than a pipe dream, one that conveniently draws blood from the EU/UN’s favorite whipping boy which is Israel. Even the US has recently been playing footsie with this dangerous idea, it’s wishful thinking.

The reality is that Iran is the source of real bloodshed & real chaos, both now and potentially much more devastatingly so going forward. Here’s to hoping the American Congress & the US Administration can find the right direction again, this being a 1st but phenomenally important step on that all too important path.

UPDATE Aug 16: Initial Iranian Response

IRNA – Foreign Ministry official on Wednesday dismissed as propaganda the US media report that the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) was put in the list of the terrorist organizations. “Such reports fall within framework of the US statesmen’s psychological-propaganda warfare against the Islamic Republic of Iran and lack any professional value,” he said.  The Foreign Ministry official said no report has yet been issued on the side of the official authorities so that no one can make a firm comment.

Addtional looks:
SoccerDad has a good overview, including fresh perspectives and criticisms. The Captain’s Quarters weighs in on the economic aspects, which is the impetus for the move..

[...]
What benefit does this bring? It allows the US to pursue sanctions against any company supporting the IRG. The Bush administration can close off banking links and access to American markets for the members of the IRG’s financial network. The US can expose these business dealings, and plans to do so as soon as possible.

That will mean taking the economic fight to the heart of the Iranian economy. Although the US could have designated just the subsidiary Qods force as a terrorist group, the decision to name the IRG gives the US a broad front. Many of Iran’s leading businessmen come from the IRG and maintain ties to it; Mahmoud Ahmadinejad served in the IRG, as did many of the political class. By naming the IRG as a terrorist group, anyone associated with it could have their assets seized from American banks. Other banks that handle their assets could face exclusion from American financial networks, which would mean most banks would close their accounts forthwith. [...]

Powerlining it..

If there is some action that can be taken against the Revolutionary Guard short of pulling a trigger, the question that occurs to me is why we haven’t taken it long ago. The Post can’t find anyone who raises that question. Instead, they find “some analysts” who questions the wisdom of a step this drastic. [...]

There has been some discussion as to the benefits of tempering this, limiting the motion etc. in order to placate EU / Arab & Asian allies, or not rock the boat. To what end?! While some in the US might prefer to saudade for the glory days when the hope was EU faux multilateralism might bring about concrete results.. It is precisely due to the fact that sanctions have not been given enough teeth and that years of European dialogs have proven utterly ineffective in engaging Iran that we are brought now, to this need for stronger economic leverage & tone.

Surely now is not the time to barlafumble & vacillate?

Considering the moral clarity involved in combating terrorism, the rapidly moving time frames and the need to defend western interests and human values against this seemingly endless front of Iranian duplicity and underhandedness, I believe SoccerDad pins the tail on the donkey – ‘seems like a no brain-er’.

Israel haters hack UN web site

Protesting against Israel by hacking the UN website!?

Interesting, I think I’m following the logic here! Tomorrow I will protest animal cruelty by buying a BIG bucket of KFC chicken! (Don’t push me, I’m near the edge - it was like 33 degrees today, I might take this protest to the next level and insist on ‘all white meat’ that way a few extra birds go down to fill my 20 piece quota).

Syney Morning Herald

The official website of the United Nations appeared to have been hacked on Sunday and briefly displayed a message protesting US and Israeli policies in the Middle East.

The section of the site reserved to statements by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon showed a message, repeated several times, that read: “Hacked By kerem125 M0sted and Gsy That is CyberProtest Hey Ysrail and Usa dont kill children and other people Peace for ever No war.”

The message also appeared on other web pages that usually display quotes and speeches from the secretary general. The pirate message disappeared from the UN website, www.un.org, at about 9:15 am (1315 GMT). “We are very concerned that this happened and we are investigating,”said UN spokesman Alex Cerniglia. “We will make security changes to prevent this from happening again,” he said. Previous attacks attributed to the hackers found on other websites suggested that at least one of them was Turkish. [...]

Goes on to then briefly state that the hack was in protest to the Lebanon war, I take it they mean Israel’s defensive actions regarding Hezbollah last summer.

I’m left wondering only one thing really, do I still get to keep the bucket of chicken!?

UK – Israel relationship heading for deep freeze

The writing is on the wall..

  • The already infamous academic boycott (incidentally, this is the 2nd time such a boycott has sprouted).
  • Yesterday’s Foreign Office recommendation report.
  • Arms sales from Britain to Israel are being frozen / blocked.
  • Former UN deputy secretary-general to Kofi Annan, Mark Malloch Brown is a big man on campus now at the Foreign Office.
  • The UK is diverging with it’s key ally, the USA in Iraq.
  • The increasing Islamification of the UK.
  • Spiralling Anti-Semitism in the UK.
  • Tony Blair’s appointment as Mid-East envoy which will only exacerbate / increase the pressure for failed resolutions.
  • Collapsing of the UK position regarding the terrorist group Hamas.

The end of the Blair era will be getting ugly. While Gordon Brown is a left-centrist & supporter of the UK / Israel relationship, his key aide and now a top guy at the Foreign Office (minister for Africa, Asia, and the United Nations) detests the Jewish State. While at the UN Mark Malloch Brown never wasted an opportunity to criticize Israel & beyond fiercely. Malloch is an Arabist, multilateralist and an appeaser of the worst kind, the reality is he has zero love for Israel and even less for the USA.

Last year DURING the Lebanon conflict with a hundred rockets striking Israel per day; Malloch Brown openly questioned the notion that Hezbollah was a terrorist organization..

FOX NEWS[...] “It’s not helpful to couch this war in the language of international terrorism. Hezbollah employs terrorist tactics; it is an organization, however, whose roots historically are completely separate and different from Al Qaeda,” he said, according to a transcript of an interview [...]

In issue after issue at the UN under Kofi, Malloch slammed Israel while showing open sympathies for her enemies – the stench of the UN is all over this guy.

Bush is considered a power supporter of Israel, but one need only look at his State Dept. to see that what the guy up top wants is not nec. reflected by his foreign office, if the US example of broken telephone between head of state & state can lead to some bad tendenecies for Israel.. You can rest assured the UK version will seem like the Ice Age.

Update: Daled Amos weighs in on the lunacy of it all, when policy goes wonko!

How can The House of Commons’ Foreign Affairs Committee say:

“Given the failure of the boycott [of Hamas] to deliver results, we recommend the government should urgently consider ways of engaging politically with moderate elements within Hamas,” the all-party group of lawmakers said.

When it is being reported that

Shortages in raw materials slowing production of makeshift rockets, lead to decline in rocket fire from Gaza.
Why would Great Britain want to open the flow of money to terrorists and make it possible to replenish the resources Hamas needs to fire rockets into Israel? [...]

Israel’s next governing party holds primaries today

Likud leader Bibi Netanyahu looks to secure his party chairmanship today in what should be a sleeper..

My personal swing to Kadima was for Ariel Sharon, Olmert gets no such allegiance and Livni deserves a good twack for being a weak Foreign Minister by almost every account.. Incidentally, not a single clause put forward by Israel re Livni’s baby - UN Resolution 1701 has been filled one year later.

She should resign tomorrow for failing the State, disappearing during the war, and steering Israel’s foreign policy nowhere fast. Her ‘we’ll win via the diplomacy theory’ has stalled & died faster than an old Ford.

Early Elections this year, I say the govt topples or at least we get the announcement around Jan ’08 – barring WWIII before then. Bibi will run the table and he’s got one chip right over here – Feel free to collect any time Benjamin, as a bonus I’ve always got fresh Burekas on hand if you have the munchies, we’ll make an afternoon of it.

UPDATE Aug 14: Netanyahu cruised to an easy victory with approx 73% of the vote.
